The Morris County Clerk warns:
"Don’t be a victim of a property deed scheme"
It has come to my attention that businesses are soliciting property owners in Morris County, offering to sell the owner a copy of their deed for $69.50. They advise the property owner that the U.S. Government Citizen Information Center recommends that they have an official or certified copy of their deed.
Joan Bramhall warns, “Don’t be fooled by these offers. You probably already have a copy of your deed.”
If a home owner needs a copy of their deed, they can go directly to the County Clerk’s office and easily obtain a certified copy of their deed for a nominal fee of $10.00, and $1.00 for each additional page. There is no need to go through a “middle man” who may charge an exorbitant fee for the same service.
As the County Clerk, I am responsible for the recording, filing and preservation of all property transactions occurring within the county. The Morris County Clerk’s office maintains copies of all documents dating back to the 1700's. These documents are located in the Vault section of the Clerk’s office, which is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 pm, and Wednesday 8 am to 6 pm.
